West Ham United play West Bromwich Albion in the Championship this weekend. Therefore, we thought that we would have a look at players who represented both sides.
Those who played for both West Ham and West Brom
Sir Geoff Hurst
Hurst is of course a West Ham legend, and along with Bobby Moore and Martin Peters were the three Hammers who helped England win the World Cup in 1966. The striker scored a hat-trick in the final and was the only player to do so until Kylian Mbappé did so in 2022.
In 503 appearances for West Ham, Hurst scored 249 goals. He also lifted silverware with the Hammers, winning the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Hurst left West Ham in 1972 and joined Stoke City. He then had a loan at Cape Town City before joining West Brom.
He was 34 when he played for the Baggies and scored just twice in 12 games for them. Hurst then had spells with Cork Celtic and the Seattle Sounders before finishing his playing career with Telford United.
John Hartson
Hartson's time at West Ham is unfortunately remembered for when he kicked Eyal Berkovic in the head. However, his record for the Hammers was good, scoring 33 goals in 77 games. He then had brief spells at Wimbledon and Coventry City before he became a legend with Celtic. He scored six goals in 24 games for West Brom. The Welshman also had a loan spell at Norwich City before retiring.
Andy Carroll
Carroll's time at West Ham will be remembered fondly by Hammers fans. He provided some memorable moments, including a hat-trick against Arsenal and the overhead kick against Crystal Palace. However, his time at West Ham was also marred by injuries.
In 2019, Carroll left West Ham and returned to Newcastle United. However, he did not get on with their manager, Steve Bruce. The striker left his boyhood club again after two years and joined Reading. He then joined the Baggies under Valérien Ismaël.
To Carroll's horror, when Ismaël was sacked, he was replaced by Bruce. The forward played just 15 times for the Baggies, scoring three goals before going back to Reading. Carroll then had spells in France with Amiens and Bordeaux. He is now co-owner, assistant coach and player at Dagenham & Redbridge.
Danny Gabbidon
Another Welshman who played for both is Gabbidon. He came through the ranks at West Brom, but only played 27 times for them. He then returned to his homeland with Cardiff City before joining West Ham, along with James Collins.
Gabbidon would win Hammer of the Year and help them reach the FA Cup final in 2006. The centre-back would play 113 times for West Ham. He then played for Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace, and Cardiff again before ending his playing career with Panteg.
