The transfer window closed last night with West Ham United signing two defenders, Morato and Adama Boiro. Clubs can still sign free agents, and former Hammer Michail Antonio could be on his way to Watford.
Sky Sports has reported "Watford remain in talks with former West Ham striker Michail Antonio. There is no rush for this deal to be completed as the Jamaica international is a free agent. Antonio, 36, has been training with Watford for the last few weeks."
Antonio is one of West Ham's best players of the modern era. He is the club's all-time Premier League top goalscorer and was part of the side that won the Europa Conference League in 2023. However, his time at the club ended after a horrific car accident.
Since leaving the Hammers, Antonio has been very outspoken about how the club treated him. For a player who made 323 appearances for West Ham, he comes across as very bitter.
Can Michail Antonio still do a job in the Championship?
Earlier this year, Antonio played for the Qatari side Al-Sailiya. However, he made just four appearances for them in the Qatar Stars League. Never far from drama, Antonio was there when missiles hit the country as a result of the Iran War.
Before he joined Al-Sailiya, Antonio was linked with Charlton Athletic. He also trained with Leicester City and Brentford. The Championship appears to be the level where clubs would still take a chance on the 36-year-old.
He is an experienced, versatile option who could be an asset to Watford. However, we do not know how he will fare with the physicality of the Championship at his age and after the serious injury he sustained. West Ham could only draw away at Watford last weekend. It would be intriguing to see Antonio potentially line up against the Hammers in the return fixture.
Antonio has already released his autobiography and has done punditry work with TNT Sports recently. A career in the media beckons for a player who has the character and outspoken nature for the business. Potentially, one last go at club football could be available for Antonio.
