Coming on the back of an underwhelming performance against Tottenham, the win against Man United at home was crucial for West Ham. Emerging victorious in the enthralling contest, which saw both clubs netting late goals, gave Hammers the important 3 points, but it feels that all wasn't well in their performance at London Stadium.

As was much expected, Kudus' suspension for the fixture had much influence on West Ham's poor start to the home matchday. Having been forced to change his well-established 4-1-4-1 formation, Lopetegui brought midfield star Edson Alvarez, but the change didn't go well. The 27-year-old looking quite off at times led to a disappointing first half for West Ham, but fortunately, late goals ensured them the 3 points in the end.

Recently, former PL star and the infamous Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards, critically analyzed Alvarez's display against Manchester United, looking unconvinced by the pivot star. Speaking on West Ham's unfavorable start to the fixture, Richards considered the 27-year-old's lackluster display considerably contributing. Micah Richards said,

""One of the players who suffered in the first half was Edson Alvarez.”"

Looking closely at Edson Alvarez's overall performance in the fixture, it was evident that he was outrun by Man United's pace on numerous occasions. Be it their midfield stars like Bruno Fernandes or their pacy winger Garnacho, some key players troubled the Mexican pivot throughout the 90 minutes. As a direct result of the high press these players implemented, Alvarez was guilty of losing possession eight times, affecting the Hammers' performance.

However, Micah Richards, while being intrigued by the pivot's lack of athleticism and explosiveness, criticized his poor positioning against the Red Devils. Micah, while complying with his co-host, added,

""Yes, and he gets a little bit lost in positions at times.”"

So far, it hasn't been a significant start for Edson Alvarez this season, having had quite inconsistent game time, apart from facing a game suspension this early. Going further, it is more than necessary for the pivot to find his best form soon, given that he may be on a move otherwise. Having trusted Alvarez for a significant amount of £35 million last summer, Hammers fans would hope he returns to the top level as soon as possible.
