Many West Ham United players were involved in friendly matches over the international break. However, there were some who were trying to secure places at the World Cup this summer for their countries.
West Ham United players on international duty
Jarrod Bowen - England
Jarrod Bowen was given an early run-out against Uruguay in England's first friendly match of the break. He came on in the 38th minute after Noni Madueke had to come off injured. The game finished 1-1 with Ben White being the talking point. On his return from self-imposed international exile, White scored for England before giving away the penalty from which Uruguay equalised.
Bowen was then introduced as a substitute in England's second friendly match. He replaced Cole Palmer after 59 minutes, but was unable to make an impact as the Three Lions lost 1-0 to Japan.
El Hadji Malick Diouf - Senegal
Senegal went into this international break with the disappointment of being stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations title. However, this appeared not to have affected them on the field as they defeated Peru 2-0. El Hadji Malick Diouf was left on the bench in that game.
Diouf fared better in Senegal's second match; he got an assist and played 90 minutes as his country defeated Gambia 3-1.
Mads Hermansen - Denmark
Mads Hermansen has done well this season to re-establish himself as West Ham's first-choice goalkeeper. His club form has been rewarded as he made his first start for Denmark over the international break. He kept a clean sheet as the Danes defeated North Macedonia 4-0.
Unfortunately for Hermansen, his side lost on penalties to the Czech Republic in the playoff final. He played the full game, which ended 2-1, did save a Ladislav Krejčí's penalty, but it was not enough.
Tomas Soucek - Czech Republic
Tomas Soucek went into this international break on a disappointing personal note as he had been stripped of the Czech Republic's captaincy. However, he still played a key role for his country. He came on at half-time as Czechia came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Ireland. Soucek then scored in the shootout as they defeated the Irish to win their World Cup playoff semi-final.
It was penalty delight for Czechia in the final as they beat Hermansen's Denmark. Soucek played the full 120 minutes and slotted in his spot-kick.
Mateus Fernandes - Portugal
This was Mateus Fernandes' first international call-up. However, he was left on the bench for Portugal's 0-0 draw with Mexico. He then made his debut against the USMNT, replacing Bruno Fernandes with five minutes to go in a 2-0 victory.
Dinos Mavropanos - Greece
Dinos Mavropanos played 83 minutes as Greece lost 1-0 to Paraguay in a friendly. Unfortunately, he suffered a head injury in that match and was then not involved as Greece drew 0-0 with Hungary. Fingers crossed his problem is not serious, and he will be back in action for West Ham soon.
Keiber Lamadrid - Venezuela
Keiber Lamadrid started for Venezuela as they defeated Trinidad and Tobago 4-1. He played 62 minutes, but would have been disappointed not to have had a goal involvement in such a convincing victory. He was then left on the bench for his country as Venezuela drew 0-0 with Uzbekistan. Despite the match being a friendly, it went to penalties and Venezuela lost 5-4 in the shootout.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka - DR Congo
Aaron Wan-Bissaka's DR Congo beat Bermuda 2-0 in a friendly before they faced Jamaica in their World Cup qualifying final. They beat the Reggae Boyz 1-0 after extra time to secure their place at the World Cup this summer. Wan-Bissaka played the full 120 minutes.
Callum Marshall - Northern Ireland
Callum Marshall, who is on loan at Bochum from West Ham, was left on the bench as Northern Ireland lost to Italy in their World Cup playoff semi-final. He then came on at half-time as Northern Ireland drew 1-1 with Wales in a friendly.
