West Ham's midfield has been largely underwhelming in the ongoing Premier League campaign despite having several elite players in their midfield ranks. Edson Alvarez, Guido Rodriguez and Lucas Paqueta haven't performed according to the expectations, with Julen Lopetegui's side often struggling to win ball possession and advance the ball forward.
These areas were one of the biggest strengths of former Hammers star Declan Rice, but his £105 million transfer move to Arsenal last year has led West Ham to play different midfielders in that role without enjoying much success. Hence, Julen Lopetegui's side may look to promote promising talent Lewis Ordford in the next few seasons, and can even consider bringing a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

If West Ham decide to prefer the latter, they could consider making an opening bid for Copa America star Richard Rios. The Colombia international guided his national team to reach the final of the Copa America 2024 and his ball-playing and defensive abilities have attracted interest from a few European clubs.
Similar to Rice, Rios is tenacious in his tackling ability and his defensive work-ethic and fitness makes him an important box-to-box midfielder in the middle of the park. Alongside that, Rios attempts several long through-balls during the match which could create some good chances for West Ham while going on a counter-attack.
Currently, there are some uncertainties regarding Edson Alvarez’s future at West Ham due to multiple transfer rumours linking him a move to join Serie A Milan in a few years. Also, Guido Rodriguez is already 30-years-old and thus, Julen Lopetegui's side will need a defensive midfield reinforcement in the upcoming seasons.
Palmeiras are said to be demanding around £15 million for Rios and it remains to be seen whether West Ham enter into negotiations with Palmeiras to sign the 24-year-old in the January transfer window.
