West Ham's search for attacking reinforcements before Tuesday's deadline has run into a firm wall. The club had a bid in the region of £17.1 million (around €20 million including add-ons) rejected for Italian forward Mohamed Ali Zoma. FC Nürnberg have gone further than simply turning the offer down. Sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou confirmed publicly on Sky Sports that the club has made its decision and will not be selling the Italian forward, telling him directly that Nürnberg intend to keep him at least through the rest of this season.
Zoma scored 14 goals in 29 appearances in the Bundesliga’s second tier last season and has continued that form into this campaign, already among Nürnberg's top scorers again. He recently scored three goals in a 3-0 win over Dynamo Dresden. That kind of output from a 22-year-old still just two seasons removed from Italy's third tier marks him out as one of the more eye-catching breakout talents in German football.
What makes him particularly attractive to West Ham isn't just the goals, though; it's the versatility. Zoma can play off either flank, lead the line as a central striker, or operate just behind a central forward, giving Nuno Espírito Santo a single acquisition that could address multiple problems at once. West Ham have looked short of pace and unpredictability in the final third through their opening league games, and a player capable of stretching defences from multiple positions is exactly the profile that could open space for both Jarrod Bowen and Taty Castellanos to do more damage further forward.
Zoma's route to this point has been unusually steep. He came up through Italian third-tier side UC AlbinoLeffe, where he scored 27 goals in 114 league appearances before earning his move to Nürnberg last August. The jump from Serie C to a prolific, Bundesliga 2 forward in the space of a single season is precisely why interest in him has spread well beyond West Ham. Reports have also linked Ligue 1 sides Marseille, RC Lens and Paris FC, among others, and Nürnberg's ownership had previously floated a valuation as high as €20 million even before West Ham's approach arrived.
There's also a genuine international subplot developing around him. Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg has reported interest from returning Italy head coach Roberto Mancini, and Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has gone further, reporting that Zoma is set to be called up for Italy's next international break, with Mancini having already informed him personally. That said, it's not entirely settled. Zoma himself said after Nürnberg's recent win over Dynamo Dresden that the Italian federation hadn't actually made contact with him at that point, while Burkina Faso's national team, drawing on his heritage, had already held a face-to-face meeting with him back in May. Whichever country wins that race, the interest itself says plenty about how highly Zoma's rapid rise from Italy's third tier is now being rated.
For now, West Ham's move looks dead. Chatzialexiou's public comments were about as unambiguous as a rejection gets, and Zoma's own muted reaction after scoring in Nürnberg's most recent win, read by some as a sign he wouldn't have minded the move going through, hasn't changed his club's position.
Nürnberg's stance leaves the door only cracked for a reconsideration in the January window, or West Ham coming back with an impressive enough bid before the window shuts on Tuesday.. With deadline day fast approaching, West Ham may now need to pivot to other targets to add the attacking spark they've been chasing this window. The club have been linked to both Ibrahima Baldé from French Ligue 2 side Rodez AF and Mikel Gogorza of FC Midtjylland. GSH reported yesterday that a bid for the 19-year-old Danish player has already been rejected.
