Michael Carrick appears to be the Premier League manager who is the most likely to be sacked. The other is another former West Ham United player, Álvaro Arbeloa. However, his Fulham side's 1-0 win over Hull City last time out has bought him a bit of time.
Carrick's Manchester United suffered a 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Come in the Champions League last night. His captain, Bruno Fernandes, publicly questioned his tactics. Carrick responded by taking a jab at his players' work rate.
It is unrest at Old Trafford, and everyone is pointing their fingers at each other. Even defender Lisandro Martinez called out the director of football, Jason Wilcox, after the loss to Atletico Madrid in the previous round of Champions League fixtures.
Many West Ham fans will feel sorry for Carrick, as he has remained popular since his days at Upton Park. Despite being from the North East, Carrick came through West Ham's academy. He also stayed with the club in the First Division despite their relegation from the Premier League.
The campaign in the First Division ended with a defeat to Crystal Palace in the playoff final. Carrick subsequently moved to Tottenham Hotspur before becoming a legend at Manchester United. It is his hero status at the Red Devils that is why he is their manager.
Carrick started his coaching career as Jose Mourinho and then Ole Gunnar Solskjær's assistant at United. He is now following in Solskjær's footsteps as a former player who impressed in an interim role before struggling when he got the job permanently.
Carrick would not have been a good fit as West Ham manager right now
After a brief spell as caretaker manager at United following Solskjær's sacking, Carrick managed Middlesbrough. He did okay with Boro, but only made the playoffs once in his three season there. When he was impressing as their manager, he was linked with becoming West Ham manager on occasion.
There were rumours that Carrick could replace David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui as West Ham boss, but it never came to fruition. Last summer, West Ham faced a conundrum as to whether to stick with Nuno Espírito Santo or not. However, Carrick was not in the running then, as he was made Man United's permanent boss after doing well last season when he replaced Ruben Amorim.
Nuno is a better option than Carrick for West Ham, as he knows how to get a side promoted from the Championship. He did so by winning the division with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2017/18 season.
The Portuguese coach established Wolves in the Premier League, managed Spurs briefly before winning the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ittihad. Before becoming West Ham manager, he qualified Nottingham Forest for the Europa League, prior to a fallout with the club hierarchy that cost him his job.
If Nuno gets West Ham promoted this season, then he could be successful back in the Premier League if he is backed. Carrick, if he is sacked by Man United, may have to drop back to the Championship to rebuild his reputation. However, his record with Boro will make clubs with expectations of at least playoffs reluctant to take a chance on him.
