Mateus Fernandes' stock is very high right now. He is now a Portugal international after making a five-minute substitute appearance in a 2-0 win over the USMNT over the recent break. Fernandes is riding a wave as he then scored in West Ham's loss to Leeds United in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Whilst West Ham are struggling and in a relegation battle, Fernandes' individual performances have made him one of the few bright sparks for the Hammers this season.
Fernandes has recently been linked with Manchester United, but now another top Premier League side is also trying to sign the midfielder.
According to CaughtOffside, "Liverpool have already had a meeting with the Gestifute agency representing West Ham United central midfielder Mateus Fernandes."
Mateus Fernandes would be a huge miss for West Ham
The only hope West Ham has of keeping Fernandes is to stay in the Premier League. He left relegated Southampton for the Hammers last summer.
Liverpool will be in for a rebuild in the upcoming transfer window after their abysmal attempt at retaining their Premier League title. They are still fifth in the division, so they could still qualify for the Champions League. It has already been confirmed that Mohamed Salah will depart the club at the end of the season. Whilst Fernandes would no doubt strengthen their midfield.
Joining Man United would also be tempting for Fernandes, especially as he would be able to play alongside his now international teammate Bruno Fernandes. The United player was the man who Fernandes replaced for his recent Portugal debut.
Michael Carrick, who was a great midfielder himself in the Premier League, has done a great job since he took over at United from Ruben Amorim. They are currently third in the league, so a place in the Champions League next season should soon be secured. They could also do with strengthening their midfield with Casemiro departing the club at the end of the campaign.
