West Ham Face Tough Battle to Land Brighton Midfielder
By Mia Claydon
As the transfer window edges ever closer, names of potential future Hammers have begun to ring around social media. One name has stuck out in the early stages of this year’s summer window – Yves Bissouma.
Fans have noticed cryptic messages suggesting that maybe, the 25-year-old is mindful of what colours he’ll play in, come August. In recent days, Bissouma has deleted all traces of his career at Brighton on his personal Instagram and has put West Ham’s trademark crossed hammers in his profile. Of course, fans could potentially be looking too deeply into this, but this is a very exciting prospect for West Ham fans.
According to many sources, the Brighton midfielder is a target for many clubs this summer, including Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle. If true, this could make the Mali international’s decision a very tough one. Despite West Ham’s lure for European football; both Chelsea and Tottenham can guarantee Champions League football. This, for any player, would be tough to turn down. Furthermore, what are the chances he will be a consistent starter for either team? How much does he want to play first-team football? Newcastle’s interest will come with a lot of money and a definite guarantee of starting football, but it’s likely to be a few seasons before they start to see domestic success.
According to reports, Brighton has placed a £30million price tag on their star player; a very reasonable price for a player of his age and ability in the current transfer market. Furthermore, the release of Andriy Yarmolenko, Mark Noble, Ryan Fredericks, and David Martin, and the potential sales of Nikola Vlasic and Arthur Masuaku, will greatly free up the Hammer’s wage bill. With the board supposedly expressing their desire in backing Moyes this summer, this could be a fantastic piece of business to get wrapped.
However, Bissouma was arrested on 6th April 2022 on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman in a Brighton nightclub. This case is still being investigated by police and may be the reason the midfielder stays in Sussex for the coming season. The conclusion of the case is vital in whether West Ham should push for the transfer, and should be something to watch.
To see Bissouma play alongside Declan Rice would be incredible. David Moyes will need to show his seriousness in regards to boosting this team to the next level – although he has proven this through Europa League and Premier League success, enhancing the team is the next step. In my opinion, Bissouma would be a marquee signing, and at just 25-years-old, has many years of competing at a high standard ahead of him.
