West Ham Women take on Champions League hopefuls, Manchester United, in the WSL on Sunday afternoon.
West Ham
The Hammers ended their three-match losing streak last weekend as they beat Reading by two goals to one at the Madejski Stadium, lifting themselves to sixth in the table. Olli Harder will hope his team can end the season on a high after what has been a very successful season for the club.
West Ham were without Anna Leat, Lucy Parker and skipper Gilly Flaherty for the match against Reading. It is unclear if they will be fit enough to return for the trip to play Manchester United this weekend.
Manchester United
Marc Skinner’s team drew 0-0 with Aston Villa last weekend despite having 18 shots on goal.
The draw lifted them to third in the table and they are battling with rivals Manchester City for a third-place finish in the WSL. If United do manage to finish above City, they will qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.
Last match between the two teams
Grace Fisk scored a 93rd minute equaliser as West Ham drew 1-1. It had seemed as if Ella Toone’s 54th minute goal would be enough to earn United a narrow victory until Fisk headed Svitkova’s corner in off the post, sparking wild celebrations from West Ham fans.
Player to watch – Ella Toone
Ella Toone joined United in their inaugural season in the Women’s Championship in the 2018/19 season. She had played for The Red Devils’ academy but moved to Blackburn Rovers as there was no senior women’s team at United at the time.
Toone made her senior England debut in February 2021. She has since made 13 appearances for the Lionesses, scoring 10 goals including a hat-trick in a World Cup qualifier against Latvia.
The Man United forward has eight goals and eight assists this season. Toone is expected to play a key part for England in this summer’s European Championships.
Predicted West Ham XI
