West Ham travel to the Madejski Stadium on Sunday to take on Reading for a place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s FA Cup.

West Ham:

West Ham manager, Olli Harder, and his assistant, Paul Konchesky, will be hoping for an improved performance from their team following the heavy defeat to Leicester City in the WSL.

Early goals from Natasha Flint and Ashleigh Plumptre saw the Royals race into an early lead before Freya Gregory put the match beyond the Hammers’ reach shortly after half-time. The disappointing loss to a Leicester team battling against relegation form the WSL effectively put an end to West Ham’s slim hopes of finishing in the Champions League places this season.

West Ham Captain, Gilly Flaherty, spoke candidly to whufc.com in the aftermath of the defeat:

"“I don’t think we were at the game at all today and we thoroughly deserved to lose. There’s a lot of things that contributed to the performance today, the conditions were difficult, the pitch was awful, but we just didn’t seem at it today at all – we deserved to get beat today.”"

Reading:

Reading also suffered a surprise loss in their last match. Their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton in the WSL was the Seagulls’ first win in in 11 matches in all competitions. Prior to the defeat, Reading had won four consecutive league matches, lifting themselves to seventh in the table, a point above West Ham.

11 days have passed since the loss to Brighton and Reading Manager, Kelly Chambers, will be hoping that the time spent on the training pitch will prove to be beneficial for her team.

Player to Watch:

Natasha Dowie is Reading’s top scorer this season having scored 7 goals in 15 matches in all competitions. The experienced striker was born in Abu Dhabi and, since starting her professional career at Watford, has gone on to represent several clubs including Fulham, Everton, Liverpool and AC Milan. During her spell at Liverpool, Dowie finished the 2013 WSL season as top scorer, was voted the Player’s Player of the Year and was named in the PFA Team of the Year. Dowie first participated in an England training camp while still a pupil in year 10, at Roundwood Park School in Hertfordshire. She has since made 14 senior appearances for England, scoring 5 goals.
