West Ham beat Man City on penalties ending their Carabao Cup reign

West Ham have defeated Carabao Cup holders, Man City, 5-3 on penalties to progress into the quarter-final of the competition in dramatic fashion.
The fourth round tie was 0-0 after 90 minutes and with no extra time in place, the game went straight to penalties with Said Benrahma scoring the winner sparking jubilant scenes at London Stadium.
Man City have won the Carabao Cup in all of the past four seasons, not losing a match in the competition for 1,827 days but Phil Foden missed City’s first penalty in the shootout giving the Hammers, who didn’t miss any of their spot kicks, the lead they didn’t let slip.
West Ham have ended Man City’s Carabao Cup dominance defeating them 5-3 on penalties after a resilient defensive performance left the game 0-0 at the end of normal time.
Captain Mark Noble, Jarrod Bowen, Craig Dawson, Aaron Cresswell and Said Benrahma were the players that held their nerve scoring the penalties for West Ham.
Pep Guardiola made nine changes to his team but still named a strong side. Meanwhile, David Moyes made eight changes including a switch in goal as Alphonse Areola came in for Lukasz Fabianski. The Frenchman was fantastic, denying City on many occasions, most notably saving from John Stones’ close range header. Areola was man of the match but there was once again another strong performance from young right-back, Ben Johnson, who seems to be improving with every game.
Nathan Ake and Ilkay Gundogan also missed big chances but despite Man City’s 25 shots, seven of which on target, the Irons also had opportunities of their own via Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko.
After the game Guardiola was full of praise for the East London side and Moyes, saying, “They are doing well in the Premier League, the Europa League and now they are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. A fantastic team, a fantastic manager.”
This season continues to get better for West Ham, building on last campaign’s successes, who currently sit 4th in the Premier League and top of their Europa League group.
The draw for the next round of the Carabao Cup takes place on Saturday 30th October at 10:30 BST.
Next up, the Hammers face Aston Villa away on Sunday 31st October before another European away day as they travel to Genk on Thursday 4th November.
