Dominant West Ham Performance To Stay Perfect After Matchweek Two
West Ham United came to play in their home opener today. The Irons thrashed Leicester City, winning 4-1 at the London Stadium.
The match kicked off to a slow start, with both teams trying to find their groove. Leicester was controlling most of the possession while West Ham looked to counter. All went to plan for Moyes’s team at the 26-minute mark as Declan Rice intercepted a pass in the midfield, springing our front four on the counter. Declan played the ball over to Jarrod Bowen, who sent Pablo Fornals off running. Pablo then played Saïd Benrahma out wide, where he played a lovely first-time cross back to Fornals as he brilliantly finished it right into the far post.
While the foxes of Leicester tried to get back into the game, disaster struck for them in the 39th minute. Ayoze Perez lost the ball and, while trying to get it back, made a hazardous challenge on Pablo Fornals. Head official Michael Oliver was prompted to review the tackle with VAR and, after a swift look, came back out to give Perez a red card.
Going into halftime up a goal and a man, the Hammers, looked to pour it on. About 10 minutes into the second half, an errant back-pass by Caglar Söyüncü led to Michail Antonio intercepting the ball with no keeper in the net at the side of the 18. He sent the ball across goal to Benrahma, who finished past the defender on the line to put West Ham up 2-0.
Leicester pulled one back through a sloppy defensive play by the Irons. James Maddison had played a ground cross that was whiffed by about three players landing to Youri Tielemans, whose initial shot was blocked by Aaron Cresswell. Unfortunately for the defender, it landed right back to Tielemans feet, and he put it away this time through Lukasz Fabianski’s legs.
Now, this is where the Michail Antonio show started. Around the 80th minute, Declan found himself in the box with the ball, and he sent a low-driven cross to Antonio, who then made a terrific turn and rifled the ball to put the Irons back up two. This goal also cemented the new number nine as West Ham’s all-time top Premier League leading goalscorer with 48… for now.
Four minutes after that record-breaking goal, Antonio found himself with another great opportunity. Vladimir Coufal crossed the ball a little behind Antonio, who then had a world-class first touch flick over his head and tapped it in past Kasper Schmeichel in the net.
An all-around great performance from West Ham with a second consecutive four-goal victory. The Hammers now find themselves top of the league after Matchweek two! It’s as great of a time as ever to be a West Ham fan as they continue their last season’s form. David Moyes really has been a revelation for this club, and I can’t wait for the next match. As always, COME ON YOU IRONS!!!
