11th: Brighton

Here lies one of my two boldest takes coming into this 2021/22 Premier League season. I think Brighton massively underachieved last season due to their poor finishing. The Seagulls had the second biggest gap in the league between the amount of goals they scored and the amount of expected goals with a +13.82 differential. They also had the biggest gap in the league in the amount of points they recorded and the expected amount of points with a +20.41 difference!

To explain this a little better this means Brighton’s expected points on the season was 61.41 but they only finished with 41 points. If they can close the gaps on these two numbers than a finish in or close to the top half of the table is definitely in reach. The way they’re going to have to do that is finish some more of these chances they’re creating.

The Seagulls have been rumored with multiple strikers so far and it seems likely they’ll have a new one before the window shuts. But for now they will need Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly to become more clinical in front of net. Connolly is a player I’ll be keeping an eye on this year as I think he could find some more consistent playing time with a whole year of Premier League experience under his belt now.

And yes I know this team lost Ben White but I believe Adam Webster is one of the more underrated defenders in the league. Not to forget Yves Bissouma was thought to be leaving this summer too but with him looking like he’s staying, the Seagulls are definitely a team I’ll be watching this year.
