Watching West Ham over the years has, at times, made for difficult viewing. Often, the team will be performing well, and then BOOM, a stupid mistake will allow the other team to take the lead. This season that has changed. 26 games into the Premier League campaign, the Hammers are now the only team not to commit an error that has directly led to the opposition scoring a goal.

West Ham were tied with Leicester City, but after Hamza Choudhury‘s poor pass allowed Matej Vydra to collect the ball and score, the Hammers are now in a league of their own. There are plenty of factors behind this improvement from the club. One reason is David Moyes’ management.

The Scottish manager has instilled confidence back into his players and thoroughly drilled defensive responsibilities into them. The club are challenging at the top of the table and have one eye on a Champions League spot. A big factor behind this is the solid defence that has only allowed 31 goals past them this season. This time last season, the club had conceded 45 goals.

West Ham’s new-found defensive ability has seen them catapult themselves up the Premier League table.

Another factor has been the improvement in the players. For most of last season, the defence was horrific form. Aaron Cresswell, Arthur Masuaku, Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena all looked like shadows of their former selves. This season Moyes has rejuvenated his players, and they now look back to their best. Cresswell has been subject to talk of an England recall.

Diop and Balbuena look back to their best, and Angelo Ogbonna was enjoying an Indian summer of good form before his injury. The capture of Craig Dawson on loan for Watford has even proved to be a masterstroke. The defender has surprised everyone with his brilliant showing so far in claret and blue.

Even Masuaku looked like a consistent defender despite his errors in the past. If West Ham continues to avoid shooting themselves, then they could be certain to qualify for a European competition of some sort this season.

Moyes’ side take on Leeds United this coming Monday and probably will make that first error of the season which will cost them the match, knowing our luck.
