West Ham Reject Chance To Sign ‘Expensive’ Former Star
West Ham have reportedly decided against re-signing former star striker Marko Arnautovic from Chinese side Shanghai SIPG F.C.
Marko Arnautovic had been linked with a move back to West Ham after a rule change in the Chinese Super League forcing clubs to cut costs. The Hammer, however, have now reportedly decided against signing the Austrian as he is too expensive.
The striker moved to China after forcing through a move in 2019 because he wanted to maximise his earning potential in a short football career. Arnautovic angered many Hammers fans with his move, especially as he had only signed a bumper deal only months before leaving.
A striker has been top of David Moyes transfer list for a while due to issues with both of his current options. Sebastien Haller, who was signed as Arnautovic’s replacement, has failed to adapt to the team’s system and is not favoured by Moyes. Michail Antonio is too injury-prone to be relied on for the rest of the season.
It has been reported that Moyes was the person that wanted Arnautovic back at the club. The manager got the controversial forward playing some of his best football after he switched him to the striker position. Arnautovic scored twenty-one goals in fifty-nine Premier League for West Ham and managed to help keep the club in the Premier League.
The news that the club were interested in bringing Arnautovic back to the London stadium split fans. Some refused to forgive and forget and would rather the club signed anyone else that has not treated the club poorly in the past. These fans might enjoy the fact that Arnautovic has suffered some karma by the rejection form his former employers.
Others wanted to see the Austrian return believing that he would have been perfect for the club’s current playing system. After all, Moyes did get Arnautovic playing his best football and turned him into one of the best strikers in the League.
West Ham have also been linked with moves for a few other strikers. Diego Costa has been suggested as ‘perfect’ for the Hammers by Paul Merson. The club also have a long-standing interest in AFC Bournemouth striker, Joshua King. The Norweigan hitman seems the most likely to be signed at the moment.
