With the January transfer window now open, West Ham have received a transfer update about the potential return of loaned out star from Fabrizio Romano.

One of, if not the most trusted source in world football for transfer news has chimed in on a potential avenue for West Ham to explore with midfield and attacking options needed in the second half of the current Premier League season.

With the Hammers currently sitting tenth at 26 points but three points off of fourth in the table, recruitment and reinforcements are needed for the team if they are to continue their fine form this season and press on.

Fabrizio Romano has suggested that West Ham could look to mutually terminate the loan deal of Felipe Anderson with FC Porto in Portugal’s Liga Nos. The Hammers former record signing and marquee attacker lost his attacking edge last season and was loaned out to re-spark his offensive output, however, limited minutes and no production has seen this plan come to a screeching halt.

A return of Anderson to East London would be a bonus for the club’s attacking options. His ability to play both left and right-wing/mid is a huge boost to David Moyes’ push for players with versatility, and he would likely perform better offensively if played in a system with five-at-the-back, which would naturally allow him to commit further up the pitch.

This season, Anderson’s only production has come in the EFL Cup where he played two matches, scoring one goal and assisting another, outside of one assist in the Taca de Portugal Placard, a Portuguese Cup competition. For Porto, Anderson has only played in five matches this season making his loan move a complete bust.

Bringing him back into the fold at West Ham could spark more offensive output as a super-sub or fill-in player for the remainder of the season. Injury seemingly always strikes the Irons and with the added threat of COVID-19 affecting players and teams, bigger squads will be better suited to weather the rest of the season.

The Premier League has also committed to the benches being extended to nine players for the rest of the season, easing the difficult decisions on who makes the squad and who misses out. Also, as mentioned above, Anderson can and had played both wings before in his career (Lazio) and West Ham are in dire need of a better, quicker option on the right-wing when Jarrod Bowen is tired.

There are only positives for Anderson returning to the team in January. His wages are large but pale in comparison to the board having to buy another attacker for a transfer fee plus wages, his ambidextrous attacking presence is a boost to the squad. A loan with no minutes is just a waste of a player’s time so West Ham should heed the call to return Felipe Anderson.
