Tomas Soucek Opens 2020 West Ham Account in Dramatic Fashion

Leaving it nearly to the last minute, Tomas Soucek picked a poignant and dramatic time to open his goal-scoring account for West Ham’s 2020/21 season.

Leaving it to the last minute in the most dramatic of situations, Tomas Soucek has finally scored for West Ham in his 2020/21 season. The Czech midfielder cropped up in an advanced position to take his chance beautifully, rewarding himself with his first goal and gifting his team the vital three points they needed to climb to 11th in the table.

Soucek endeared himself to West Ham supporters after arriving in January of this year simply on the back of his nonstop work-rate and ability to play the box-to-box role manager David Moyes clearly needed. He never pulled out of a tackle and never backed down from an aerial dual playing the West Ham way before really knowing what that term meant.

Seven games into his abbreviated Hammers debut season he endeared himself more, grabbing a goal against Chelsea in what would end up being another dramatic win for the Claret and Blue. He had a previous goal taken away by VAR but stuck with it and got his just rewards, contributing to the remarkable post-lockdown play from this team.

The second half of the 2019/20 season would end with West Ham safe and with three goals to Soucek’s name. All three were vital in the Hammers search for safety with him scoring in the win over Chelsea, a nervy draw with Newcastle, and in the clinching win over Watford.

With expectations higher this season, Soucek started extremely quietly in the goals category. This can be explained away, however, after looking at the opposition. Rather than having the Premier League’s elite sprinkled throughout the schedule, a dangerous run of consecutive elite competition can be to blame for a muted start for Soucek.

He would open his 2020/21 account in dramatic fashion, though, stealing headlines and all three points in a game marred by chances not taken by both West Ham and Fulham. Soucek’s situational awareness rewarded him with this goal as he pressed into the box late to support Sebastien Haller and Said Benrahma’s goalscoring efforts.

Soucek is off the mark in what could be a surprisingly good season for the Hammers. Three points were picked up off the back of the Czech robot’s well-taken goal and the climb up the table continues for the Hammers. Undoubtedly, more goals are on the way for Soucek who is growing in comfort and adoration as West Ham’s box-to-box operator.
