Despite West Ham’s best efforts they were unable to hold on against Liverpool and were forced to leave Anfield empty-handed.
West Ham went into the match against Liverpool hoping to continue their unbeaten run of four games. The Hammers got off to the perfect start after ten minutes when Pablo Fornals scored his second Anfield goal to give the club the lead.
Liverpool, however, came back to win the match. A penalty and goal from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota, the Portuguese attacker’s goal arrived in the 85th minute was enough to give the Reds all three points.
The Hammers did make it difficult for the Champions and defended brilliantly for the vast majority of the game. Liverpool got their goals from a ‘soft’ penalty on Salah for the first. The second was the only moment of real quality that the Reds produced all game.
Speaking after the match, West Ham defender, Aaron Cresswell believes that the Hammers were deserving of something from the match.
"“We’re disappointed and on another night we could have got something out of the game.”Cresswell on the defeat to Liverpool."
The defeat is disappointing for the club, especially after the positive results they have picked up in the last month. Big victories over Leicester and Wolves were followed by impressive draws against Tottenham and Manchester City. These results see the club in a much healthier position then what was expected when the fixture list was first announced.
Cresswell did bare this information in mind as the 30-year-old made the point to remind people of the good work the team has done in recent weeks.
"“That’s a sign of progress. On the back of four good results against top sides, to come to Anfield and feel disappointed not to come away with something [shows that].“We’ll go again, get our heads down and work hard all next week.”Cresswell told WHUFC."
The club has on paper easier fixtures coming up in their next fixtures. Firstly the Hammers will welcome London-rivals Fulham to the London Stadium before travelling to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United,
Both of the teams are below West Ham in the Premier League and are sitting in the relegation zone with one point each. The Hammers are currently 14th in the table with eight points, and if they can pick up maximums in both matches, it could be enough to rise into the top half of the table.
Despite the loss to Liverpool, there are still plenty of reasons to be positive about the Hammers at the moment. Going into November with eight points and a positive goal difference is a brilliant achievement considering the fixture list.
