West Ham’s hunt for a back-up striker to another blow as they have had a bid for Bournemouth striker Joshua King rejected.

Joshua King has been linked with West Ham over the past week. The Norweigan attacker would have provided competition for Michail Antonio and Sebastien Haller. King would also offer support to the wingers due to his ability to play in multiple positions.

The Hammers are close to signing Brentford winger Said Benrahma. There were reports suggesting the club wanted to sign both the Algerian and King, but West Ham have had a bid rejected for the Bournemouth ace.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

The big was in the region of £13 million for King, a reasonable fee for a 28-year-old striker with one year left on his current Cherries contract. Bournemouth however, wants a fee closer to £17.5 million.

There may only be £4.5 million dividing the clubs at the moment, but for West Ham and their current financial position, it might be too much. The Hammers have struggled to bring in players all summer. Vladimir Coufal is the only new face to join the senior squad this summer, though the club did sign Tomas Soucek on a permanent deal.

Fans were led to believe that the club’s main aim this summer was to bolster the defence. In the week leading up to deadline day, West Ham saw an unimaginable number of failed moves for central-defenders across Europe.

So for some, there will be confusion around the clubs current reported transfer dealings. From bidding for centre-backs to switching to an attacking winger and a striker. Perhaps Moyes has decided that there is not enough quality in the Championship to sign a first-choice defender and would prefer to sign the attackers while they are available.

Though, if the Hammers really want to sign King they will have to go again. The Norwegian striker possesses plenty of Premier League experience, and there will be other clubs sniffing around him for themselves.
