Coufal in but, West Ham still have work to do.
West Ham confirmed the signing of Vladimir Coufal earlier today, but there is still work to be done before the window slams shut.
The transfer window will shut on October 5th for Premier League clubs, and West Ham have only signed one new face all summer. Ryan Fredericks‘ hamstring injury prompted the signing of Vladimir Coufal. The Czech defender will likely become the first-choice from now on.
Coufal will reunite with former SK Slavia Prague midfielder Tomas Soucek. Fans are hopeful that the 28-year-old will have a similar impact in the first team as Soucek. The midfielder has been a great signing so far for the Hammers.
Despite the signing of Coufal, West Ham still have plenty of work to do Monday. The Hammers require a new central defender. David Moyes has been chasing a new defender all summer. This chase has seen the club get linked to what seems like every defender in Europe.
The three main targets at the moment seem to be Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenković, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah and Joe Rodon from Swansea City. Moves for Milenkovic and Maksimovic must happen quickly should the club want them though.
A deal for Milenkovic and Tah must be wrapped up on Monday. Premier League clubs can only sign players from Europe and other clubs in England’s top league until then. A deal for Rodon could happen up until October 16th as the EFL and Premier League have agreed to an extension.
Milenkovic seems to be the top target as a bid has already been made; however, AFC Fiorentina are asking for more money. The potential deal for Tah has been rumoured as a loan-to-buy which could suit all parties.
West Ham are also in need of another left-midfield option. Pablo Fornals is currently being played out of position in order to make up for the inconsistent Felipe Anderson. The main target for this position would be Brentford’s Said Benrahma. The Algerian winger has started this season as he ended the last campaign.
Benrahma has attracted interest from all over the Premier League, but is still available for the Hammers to take him, should they pay the £20 million fee. The Hammers would be wise to make this move as the left-wing position is undermanned, especially after the sale of Grady Diangana.
Hans Vanaken could still be an option for the Hammers. The Club Brugge midfielder was subject of a bid last week, which was rejected. Moyes is a big fan of the five-time International, and he could provide an excellent alternative to Manuel Lanzini.
The signing of Coufal is a good start to the Hammers business, but there is still plenty more to be done. The club needs to reinforce while they can, or the Hammers could be in another relegation battle come to the end of the season.
