After scoring his first two goals of the Premier League season for West Ham, Jarrod Bowen has set himself a target of goals to score this season.
West Ham signed the winger from Hull City on deadline day of the January transfer window earlier this year. The Hammers beat the likes of Crystal Palace for the Englishman’s signature, and the move can be deemed to have been a successful one so far.
Since joining Jarrod Bowen has played very well in the claret and blue of West Ham, the 23-year-old has shown the full capacity of his engine with his high work rate. Before last night though Bowen had only managed one competitive goal for the Hammers, in the previous season against Southampton.
The winger’s record at Hull was excellent, scoring 51 times in 131 appearances for the Tigers, and fans have been expectant of more goals form the £25 million man. After last night Bowen has put any doubters out of sight with his brace against Wolves.
Before the match, there had been calls for Andriy Yarmolenko to be given a chance in the Premier League team. The Ukrainian impressed against Bowen’s former club, Hull City, in the League Cup scoring two goals and being given a near-perfect rating in GSH player ratings.
After the game, Bowen said that he has always been targeting double figures for the season. Should the winger match this aim, he will equal Antonio’s record from last season, and the goals could be crucial to any success the Hammers find this season.
"“I’ve always said double figures.”“I know it is going to be difficult in the Premier League this season but I believe I can score goals at this level. That is what I am going to aim for and if I keep performing the way I did last night I don’t think there’s any reason I can’t get there”.“I was due a goal. When two come at you you’re buzzing. The disappointment was I couldn’t get on the end of the cross for the hat-trick but my first Premier League brace, buzzing with that.”"
West Ham’s win against Wolves means they have pushed up into the top of the Premier League table to tenth position. Furthermore thanks to the goals from Bowen, Sebastien Haller and an own-goal from Raul Jimenez, the Hammers now have a positive goal-difference.
Next for the Hammers is a tricky trip to up to play Everton in the League Cup round of 16. After the match against the Toffees, it is another Premier League clash against Leicester City.
