West Ham fans, it’s time to hit the panic button
By Jay Korman
After a very uninspiring summer, many West ham fans were still holding out hope for this upcoming season.
I’m having a tough time writing this article because I absolutely love this club. The Premier League season is set to begin in less than a week, and I don’t think I have ever been more nervous and depressed for a season in quite some time. We knew it may have been a tough summer for the club, but after the past 2 or 3 moves West Ham have made, I think it is time to hit the panic button.
The sale of Grady Diangana is absolutely heartbreaking. I cannot believe the sale was signed off on, and there could not have been a more demoralizing move to make. The fanbase is furious with ownership, and many players on the squad seem very upset at the sale. What does it say about a club to sell your own homegrown academy graduate to a rival club due to the fact that there are apparently “no funds”?
I understand that the Diangana money is apparently being used to bring in defenders, but what an appalling decision from the board. It just absolutely sucks the life out of you as a fan and makes you angry. Decisions like these are why some fans are sick of the ownership and are demanding change. This is not how you run a football club.
As if things could get any worse, West Ham were embarrassed in their pre-season finale against Bournemouth, and some of the performances were shocking. Of course, it was not the XI that will face Newcastle next week, but you could argue that the backline will look the same. Ben Johnson had a stinker of a performance, and Issa Diop did not look match fit. Very worrying signs when your season starts in less than a week.
As the best fans in the world, of course, we are going to back the team this season. We all love West Ham and get so emotionally invested because we care and want to see the club succeed. However, this window has been unlike anything I have ever seen as a fan of this club. No plan, no action, no signings, all to be topped off with the Diangana sale a week before the season is set to begin.
Let’s hope that the Hammers can surprise us this season and really put out a product we can all be proud of as fans. After a season where we came in 16th to make no signings and no investment, only to sell at the end of the window, is a brutal way to start an already shaky season.
