West Ham could start the season in a weak state
West Ham already have a very hard start to the season, but with each day that passes, it seems to be getting more daunting with every breaking news.
David Moyes will be without Grady Diangana after his move to West Brom for £18 million. But there are also some major injury concerns in the West Ham squad ahead of their match with Newcastle United at the London Stadium.
Declan Rice is currently struggling with an ankle injury, and even though he is set to play for England in the Nations League, he may not be at his best come the start of the season. The three Lions are about to play Iceland and Denmark, and one nasty tackle could see Rice miss West ham’s season opener.
There is, of course, a chance Rice will be fine to play, but there is no chance of Hammers fans seeing Tomas Soucek or Issa Diop play against Newcastle it seems. Soucek is currently in quarantine after coming into contact with someone who had tested positive for Coronavirus.
The loss of Soucek is massive, as he has already made himself a vital member of the West Ham side, despite only joining in January. The other shame around Soucek is that he seemed to be in good form, scoring in a preseason game again Brentford.
Diop is the other player who will be missing for the Hammers as he tries to overcome his injury. The Frenchman has not played a single minute of football since the end of last season as he has suffered an injury which will see him miss the season opener.
This injury to Diop does provide an opportunity to Fabian Balbuena to prove himself to David Moyes. The Paraguayan had a disappointing second season with the Hammers after a solid debut campaign. It was believed that Balbuena could be on his way out of the club as Moyes does not have faith in the centre-back.
West Ham will need to hope for some good luck in the next couple of weeks. If the Hammers bad luck continues it could mean a first-match defeat to start yet another season for the club.
