S.S. Lazio is on the lookout for a new attacking midfielder after missing out on David Silva, and the Italian side is now interested in signing West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini.

It was originally thought that Lazio was interested in re-signing former winger Felipe Anderson. The Italian club has now changed tracks after super-agent Vincenzo Morabito spoke of Lazio’s interest in Manuel Lanzini.

Speaking to noi biancocelesti, Morabito mentioned that Lazio does not like to resign players and are instead interested in Lanzini. The Argentinan could be seen as a better fit for the side as he has a more similar playing style to former target David Silva compared to Anderson.

The Rome based side lost out on signing Silva as a free agent after he instead chose to join Spanish side Real Sociedad. The Spaniard was without a club after leaving Manchester City at the end of their Champions League campaign.

"“I mention a name that hasn’t come up yet, a real phenomenon: West Ham’s Lanzini,” Morabito told the website.“Lanzini, who is returning from an injury, was valued at 50 million two summers ago. He’s a phenomenal player, able to emulate David Silva, and he costs 15 million.”"

Lanzini has not been the same since returning from an ACL injury that put him on the sidelines for almost an entire year. Last season the argentian disappointed and failed to contribute in a struggling West Ham side.

In the 2019/20 season, Lanzini only managed three assists in twenty-four games. It was the first season since joining the Hammers that Lanzini did not score at least one goal in. It is a shame to see Lanzini’s form decline, especially as David Moyes was able to get the best out of the ‘Jewel’ in his first stint as manager.

The potential sale of Lanzini could work wonders for the Hammers own transfer window. If West Ham accepts a bid of £15 million from Lazio, it would remove an underperforming player form the squad and also remove Lanzini’s very high wages from the bill. That money could go to strengthening weakened areas of the squad.

It will be sad to see Lanzini sold. The 27-year-old was quite rightly a fan favourite for much of his time at the club. Goals against Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham, will put Lanzini into that ‘Cult Hero’ category. Lanzini’s sale, however, could be a necessary one to boost the Hammers before next season.
