Felipe Anderson has had a rough last few months and has struggled to impose himself under West Ham manager David Moyes.

The Brazilian winger was signed from S.S. Lazio by West Ham in 2018 for what was then a club-record transfer fee. Anderson impressed Hammers fans with his pace and skill, and his early form was scintillating. The 27-year-old finished the 2018/19 season with fifteen goal contributions from only forty appearances in all competitions.

Anderson’s form has declined over the last year or so leaving his position at West Ham in doubt. The winger started the 2019/20 season very well and was one of the Hammers most prominent attackers. But the mercurial forwards was unable to convert his chances into goals and finished the season with only one goal to his name.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Despite not scoring regularly Anderson, did provide four assists for his teammates, but it was not enough for the Hammers to avoid a relegation battle. To make things worse for the winger after he scored his first goal of the season, soon after he picked up an injury which kept him out of action for a while. Moyes had to come up with a system which didn’t involve the Brazilian. The manager did just that and found massive success with Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Pablo Fornals forming a makeshift front three.

It was this system that led the Hammers to Premier League security and kept Anderson on the bench until the end of the season. When the Scot gave Anderson a chance, he found it difficult to impress. Clearly low on confidence, Anderson needed stability behind him so he would feel safe to stay forward and attack. But as Aaron Cresswell proved inconsistent, the attacker spent a lot of his time having to cover for the out-of-sorts defender.

Now Anderson looks set to be given a chance to prove himself to the West Ham faithful once more. The Brazilian has rumoured to be one of the Hammers up for sales to raise funds for the transfer window. Two options were Italian giants Napoli and a return to Lazio. These moves now seem off, as the clubs don’t have the finances to offer a respectable amount. Napoli has spent £72 million on Lille star Victor Osimhen, and Lazio is putting together a financial package to sign free agent David Silva.

Should Anderson remain at West Ham, a fresh start next season could do wonders for him. Everyone knows Anderson has plenty of quality; he needs the backing to show it.
