West Ham United targeting Wigan defensive duo after EFL decision
News that Wigan Athelitc’s relegation to League One has been confirmed it may have helped West Ham’s faltering transfer window.
West Ham has been very inactive since the window opened, with the only bit of business being completed is the move to make Tomas Soucek‘s loan move permanent. It is becoming apparent that the club is not willing to spend heavily this summer, so the club is on the lookout for some bargains.
Wigan was relegated from the Championship after they were deducted twelve points. The Latics’ were punished because they went into administration. This news means that several of their best players could be available for low prices.
David Moyes is reportedly interested in two particular players from Wigan. One player is the American left-back Antonee Robinson. The 22-year-old had an outstanding season and would undoubtedly be an improvement on the Hammers current options, should he be able to transfer his skills to the Premier League.
According to Whoscored.com, Robinson bettered Aaron Cresswell in tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks throughout the whole season. The American would also be an upgrade on Arthur Masuaku; his stats are by far more superior over the DR Congo international.
It may be a challenge to sign Robinson as he has been linked to some big European clubs in the last year. In January the left-back was on the cusp of a £10 million move to AC Milan, only for the move to fall through because of timing. But, because of Wigan’s relegation, the Hammers may be able to sign the player for a snip by comparison.
The other player on Moyes shopping list is Cedric Kipre. The 23-year-old was at the heart of Wigan’s defence over the season, playing 36 times in the league. The Frenchman was even able to chip in with a couple of goals for the Latics.
Currently valued on transfermarket at £1.08 million, the Hammers could be able to sign Kipre on a bargain deal. But, much like Robinson, statistically, Kipre is very impressive but whether or not they can make the step up to the Premier League remains to be seen.
West Ham fans might not be to enthused about the prospect of signing two players who have just been relegated from the Championship. But if they were able to make the step up their transfers could prove to be very shrewd signings.
