What’s cheaper than free? Nothing. Well in football you likely make it up in wages, but if you can minimise outlay at the beginning at least that’s got to be something. And Calvin Verdonk, 23 years old formerly of Feyenoord, is out of a contract and has not been linked to any other clubs that I can see in recent weeks. A young player who played 25 games in the Dutch top division last season, once again I think there’s significant upside to signing someone like Verdonk.

Whilst there are some reports claiming he’s defending isn’t always up to scratch, Whoscored shows him making 3 tackles per game and claiming 1.9 interceptions per 90 as well. Hardly shoddy numbers. IN fact, the site actually lists tackling as one of his strengths, which isn’t exactly bad when you remember all the times Cresswell’s failed in the challenge or just simply not been there to make it.

Unfortunately, he is also poor in the air, which means we wouldn’t see much improvement on that side of things over Cresswell. But I didn’t pick these players as perfect solutions to West Ham’s left-back issue. That’s a whole different article. But Verdonk could add some reliability and steel to the left side of our defence whilst we get things back on track post coronavirus. And if we have to sell to buy, shipping Masuaku for a couple of million and getting Verdonk in would leave us is a net positive position, even if the step-up proves a bit too much for the Dutchman.
