Three budget left backs that could solve West Ham’s issues
Max Clark
Now I don’t like to label players as the next anything or anyone, but Max Clark has the potential to work himself into being the next Andy Robertson. Why do I say that? Well featuring at left-back, the British player formerly at Hull is known for his high work rate, ability to keep going for 90 minutes and desire to put balls into the box. Obviously there is a quality jump to make, but Andy Robertson wasn’t always the gun of a full-back he is now, joining Liverpool for around 9m a few years ago.

Clark is around the same age Robertson was when he made the jump to Liverpool, and transfermarkt currently has his value around 675,000. Yep, under a million. Now whilst this is purely a contract and standing valuation (FM database has his value around 3m), we could see a small bid secure his services from Dutch club Vitesse. And his stats from the previous year don’t look too bad either.
With 22 appearances in the Eredivisie last season, Whoscored has Clark registering 1 goal and 3 assists, with 1.5 key passes per game alongside 1.7 crosses. They also list his strengths as Blocking, Crossing, Key passes and tackling, all of which would be great on our left-hand side. Now I’m not saying that he would be an automatic superstar, but I certainly think he could add to our strength down the left-hand side and play consistently throughout the year.
Whilst probably not available as cheaply as transfermarkt says, I think he could be worth enquiring about, especially given the potential upside we could see from the resale value. And whilst this one could be cheap, the next is potentially free.
