It has been reported that West Ham United are stepping up their interest in Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez. The Uruguayan midfielder could potentially complete the Hammers midfield.

According to HITC West Ham are interested in bringing the 24-year-old to the London Stadium. Cagliari is negotiating a new contract with their star player, which is set to include a £33 million release clause.

The contract on offer, however, is yet to be signed due to the lockdown caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. This delay could prompt the Hammers to move for the all-action midfielder, all made his name at the 2018 World Cup with his workman-like performances for Uruguay.

West Ham should look to take advantage of the delay in contract negotiations and pounce for Nandez. The Coronavirus pandemic has caused players values to drop and club finances to take a hit all across the world. So the Hammers could look bring Nandez in for much less than his expected release clause.

Nandez is currently valued at £18.9 million on TransferMarkt.com, way below his rumoured release clause. Meaning West Ham could bring in a quality midfielder for a very reasonable price, especially when compared to the transfer markets of previous years.

The former Boca Juniors man has had a decent debut season in Italy. Nandez has made 23 appearances scoring one goal and assisting four, not bad for a player who is predominately defensive in nature. West Ham would need him to work on his discipline as he has picked up ten yellow cards during the season.

The Uruguayan can play many roles in the midfield, despite playing the majority of his football as a defensive midfielder. Nandez is comfortable as a box-to-box midfielder and can even play on the right-wing, this flexibility makes him an even more attractive target.

Nandez’s utility man ethos would allow him to fit in perfectly into West Ham’s new-look midfield alongside Declan Rice and Tomáš Souček. All three of them can defend and have bursts forward, allowing West Ham to have a very dynamic midfield.
