In what has almost been a yearly occurrence, William Carvalho has popped back up on the transfer radar for West Ham. Is he worth the chance or even needed?

Speaking on the rumor first, according to reports from transfer20.com, West Ham are interested and want to sign the talented Portuguese midfielder. After seemingly taking a break from Carvalho rumors over the past two windows, it appears that he might be rising to the top of the Hammers list once more.

This news comes at an exciting time because West Ham arguably has a defensive midfield pairing already lined out. The future star, if he wishes to say, in Declan Rice and the potential long term signing in Tomas Soucek would be more than enough to keep Carvalho away. What adds to the interest, however, is that maybe there is more being cooked up than desired.

Some have started the speculation that signing William Carvalho would be the end to Declan Rice, and it honestly would be. West Ham would, in turn, gain a lot of revenue off of the transfer deal and get similar talent back for half the cost. But is it worth the risk?

Besides the before-mentioned cost comparison, not really. Even with his enjoyable statistics over his career, 270+ matches played; he just isn’t worth signing if you are going to offload Rice as a result. Now, the other side of that coin (Rice leaving and West Ham needing a replacement) does make more sense, but surely, the Hammers could spend the money in other places needing help.

Hopefully, Carvalho, being linked with West Ham, is just an age-old tactic of bringing up speculation from the past. Nevertheless, if the Hammers are forced to offload Rice this season, signing the La Liga CDM would soften an otherwise deep blow. Case in point, if Rice stays then, he’s not needed. If Rice goes, then he is just a sad memory of what could have been.
