When Aston Villa paid in excess of £20 million to AFC Bournemouth for Tyrone Mings many eyebrows were raised. The move turned out to be a stroke of genius by the West Midlands club. Since Villa made his loan move permanent, Mings has won promotion to the Premier League and become a full England International.

Mings is a towering centre-back at almost two metres tall. The defender is brilliant in the air and makes many defensive contributions for the Villa, making 1.7 blocks per game. This dwarfs the numbers of current Hammers defenders Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna.

The Villa defender also provides at the other end of the pitch. Mings has scored two goals and assisted one in his 23 appearances in the Premier League this season. The Bath born defender has earned many admirers, including England manager Gareth Southgate with his performances this season confirming his brilliant talent.

West Ham might find themselves in the market for a new centre-back come the next transfer window. Rivals Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for Diop. If the Frenchman left it would only leave the Hammers sort at the back. West Ham would only have an ageing Angelo Ogbonna and inconsistent Fabian Balbuena as senior options.

The 27-year-old still has been somewhat of a late bloomer, but could still be a. vital player for the Hammers for at least the next five years if brought in. Mings is currently valued at £20.25 million and would become West Ham’s most expensive defender ever, but he could be the perfect replacement should Diop leave the club.
