In the midst of what has been a very poor season for West Ham United, one of their key veterans has really stepped up and shown the necessary leadership and quality to help get the Irons out of the mess they are currently in.

Obviously, this has not been an ideal season for West Ham. The season started out with new hope and ambition to get into the top 6 in the table, but the Hammers currently find themselves in a relegation battle with David Moyes at the helm once again. However, things this season have not been all doom and gloom, as one key veteran in the squad has really stepped up and given fans hope about the current state of the squad.

Angelo Ogbonna has been absolutely magnificent this year and should be the clear front-runner for the Hammer of the Year award. With his calmness and leadership at the back, he has clearly been a true leader for the club and a player that the other members of our squad should aspire to be like both on and off the pitch.

There were so many matches this season where, if not for Ogbonna’s heroics, the Hammers could have lost the match, or conceded a ridiculous amount of goals. I think that Ogbonna’s play on the field has really impacted the development of Issa Diop in a very positive way as well. Diop seems way more under control and composed at the back when partnered with Ogbonna, and is way more out of character on wild on the pitch when partnered with Fabian Balbuena.

Although Ogbonna is getting up there in age, as he is currently 31 years old and has a birthday in May, therefore, it is even more impressive that he is having his best season yet at such an old age. The Hammers need to capitalize on Ogbonna’s last hurrah of form. West Ham, however, needs to make sure they have a replacement lined up for his inevitable departure soon.

Angelo Ogbonna may not have been a world-class defender at West Ham during his time at the club, but he was a player that always gave it his all and played for the badge. He has been great this season, and I hope he has a few more in him because he is surely a player who will be missed when he is gone.
