West Ham should consider Felipe Anderson sale at the right price
By Jay Korman
Rumors have been circulating recently that West Ham United may try to cash in on their star Brazilian winger over the summer transfer window.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Felipe Anderson is an incredibly talented footballer. After joining West Ham last summer, Anderson enjoyed a great start to life in the Premier League. He used rapid pace and skill in the attack, and tallied 9 goals and 4 assists in a season where he was supposed to be adapting to the brutal nature of the Premier League.
However, this past season has been a complete step in the wrong direction. In a season marred by injuries and missed chances, Anderson just could not seem to get rolling for the Hammers this year. He seemed a bit slower on the ball and less willing to take on opposing fullbacks in the final third.
I don’t think that anyone should be questioning the talent of the player which is very evident, but the fact of the matter is that at his price tag, there needs to be results and goals for a club that is struggling at the bottom of the table.
As for Anderson’s replacement, Jarrod Bowen showed in his few matches for the Hammers before the Premier League was suspended that he is capable of scoring crucial goals for a top-flight side. The Hammers will need to bring in other attacking reinforcements over the summer as well, but overall, it seems that they could reinvest the money they get for Anderson into other key areas, such as the midfield.
Mark Noble is not getting any younger, and it would be great to have some key depth in that area behind Soucek and Rice. Another area the Hammers could use the Anderson money is at the fullback position. The Hammers are lacking major depth at both left and right-back, and bringing in one or two players for depth at those areas would seem to be a wiser investment of funds then holding onto Anderson.
Regardless of what happens with Felipe Anderson this summer, I think all West Ham fans should be thankful for his time at the club. He dazzled us at times and scored some brilliant goals, and always seemed to fight for the badge. Sometimes, it just does not work out for a player, and that very well may be the case with Anderson in the future.
