West Ham: Philipp Max Could Solve Left back Issues
West Ham United have struggled with their left-backs in recent years due to the inconsistency of Arthur Masuaku and Aaron Cresswell. As Green Street Hammers are taking a scouting mission to the Bundesliga there is one man who stands out and could solve the Hammers issues.
Philipp Max of FC Augsburg has had an astonishing season in the Bundesliga before the season had to be postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Presuming the world turns to normal soon and there is a transfer window this year at some point, than West Ham would be making a smart decision to bring in the German full-back.
Max is very attacking left-back and has racked up an amazing seven goals and five assists in the top German division this season. What makes Max’s stats seem even more impressive is that he has more goal contributions than any West Ham United player this season.
According to Whoscored.com, the 26-year-old has slightly less defensive contribution than current Hammers Cresswell and Masuaku, but his attacking input more than makes up for it. If Max did arrive at the London Stadium and David Moyes was able to work on his defensive abilities he could turn into a top-class full-back for the Hammers.
Despite being one year out of Moyes new “under twenty-five policy“, an exception could be made for Max. Currently valued at £12 million on TransferMarkt.com West Ham might be able to snap him up for slightly less than his value due to FC Augsburg’s poor League position. The riches of the Premier League could be too much for them to hold on to their star player.
Although, the Hammers could face a battle to get him as his brilliant season has seen him gain a lot of attraction from all over. Max was set to become a regular in the Germany national squad and add to his three caps because of his performances this season. This would make it even more difficult to acquire his signature.
Philipp Max would be a good start to solving West Ham’s continuous left-back issues. Max’s defensive abilities are a worry but if they were ironed out then he would be a big improvement for West Ham United next season.
