A good way to judge the ins and outs of a club is to look at who they brought in and who was sold. So, how have West Ham United’s departures been elsewhere?

At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, West Ham United let go of or sold 11 different players which opened the door for 6 transfers in during the summer and 3 in during the winter window. Out of those initial 11 left gone, 4 were left go on a free transfer, being out of contract, and that’s where we start.

Moses Makasi was left without a club and contract after he couldn’t get a solid run-in with the Hammers midfield and joined FC Eindhoven in the second-tier of Dutch football last offseason. Scoring 1 goal in 24 matches isn’t lights out but it’s a constructive start for the 22-year-old.

After just six months with the Hammers, Samir Nasri left for the Belgium side RSC Anderlecht playing just 9 matches and scoring twice this season. Both Nasri and Makasi never really played a major impact with the Hammers as one couldn’t get a start and the other was leaving really as soon as he got there.

The next two free transfers were two long-lasting servants of the club, Adrian and Andy Carroll. Adrian left the Hammers after 6 seasons to join lead leading Liverpool. He has played in some remarkable matches for the Reds but in 18 matches has conceded 24 goals. As for the beloved Carroll, 14 matches, 4 huge assists, and yet more injuries.

Youngsters Sam Byram and Reece Oxford were finally sold after not really getting going for the club as Byram joined Norwich and Oxford to Augsburg. Byram has played in 20 matches total and Oxford played in 8 as both of their clubs currently battle in a relegation fight.

Two of the Hammer strikers left for Spain as Javier Hernandez was sold to Sevilla and Lucas Perez to Alaves. Perez has somewhat proven the Hammers wrong, scoring 11 times in 26 games. Chichartio scored 3 times for the Spanish side before now being sold to the MLS giants, LA Galaxy.

West Ham also sold two young and promising midfielders as Pedro Obiang went back to Italy to join Sassuolo and Edimilson Fernandes was sold to FSV Mainz in the Bundesliga. Edi has successfully played in 18 matches ever-growing his potential and Obiang has continued his solid career in 23 matches, scoring once and assisting once.

Last and certainly least, was the transfer of Marko Arnautovic. The 30-year-old finally got his wish to leave for China as he was sold off to Shanghai SIPG in the summer. Since joining the Chinese side he has played in 16 total matches with 11 goals on his route to trophies and Championships.

There are certainly a few players that some might still want back at the club but for the most part, the club has moved on in a solid way since their departures and has brought in some solid replacements with the money earned from their leaving and more of the same needs to continue happening.
