Hammers should take a look at Josh Murphy over the summer window
By Jay Korman
When West Ham look to bolster their squad over the summer transfer window, young players from the Championship seem to be a better investment for the club at the moment.
With the Premier League season up in the air due to Coronavirus, West Ham, at least for now, seem safe from relegation. We do not have a timetable for when the season could resume, or if it will even resume at all, but what we do know is that the Irons need to drastically change their transfer business unless they want to end up back in this position next year.
The Hammers have recently had a transfer approach to sign some bigger names from Europe’s top 5 leagues, including the likes of Felipe Anderson, Pablo Fornals, and Sebastien Haller. Although these are all very talented footballers, the fact of the matter is that this approach is not helping the Hammers win football matches.
It seems as though the squad depth needs to be gutted to pull off these signings, and it has left the Irons with a very thin squad that is constantly fatigued, along with the fact that the lack of depth makes the challenge of a cup run even greater.
What West Ham needs, is to slowly but surely invest in solid Championship players to fill out the squad. Not necessarily the big-name players across Europe, but young, hungry, passionate, and talented players that will play for the badge and our great fan-base. The first name that comes to mind for me, is Josh Murphy.
Murphy is a 25-year-old winger who currently plays for Cardiff City in the Championship. Although his goal and assist totals may not blow you away (6 goals and three assists in 27 matches), he is a very talented and hardworking player that could come in and compete for a spot in the starting XI.
With many attacking players futures in question at the club, Murphy could be a great backup plan should one of the Hammers stars depart over the summer, and overall I feel, would be a worthwhile investment for the club at an affordable price.
The simple fact of the matter is that West Ham’s current transfer business has failed them over the past couple of seasons. The big names have come in, but the results have not changed. Let’s hope that a potential new business model of signing young hungry players will lead to better results over the coming seasons.
