This Current West Ham duo resemble a blast from the past
After Saturday’s convincing win, the Hammer’s current strike force partnership of Antonio and Haller has been getting high praise from a former West Ham legend.
More often than not you will see current players get compared to players from the past… but it’s not every day that you see current players getting connections from clubs legends themselves. This time, its former West Ham hero Dean Ashton making the comparisons.
The duo of Michail Antonio and Sebastien Haller have been compared to former greats Ashton and Marlon Harewood. Big shoes to fill? I think yes and its funny that it has been brought up by Ashton himself because it was right in front of us but somehow we missed it.
In many ways, Michail and Marlon are the same types of players… fast, strong as an ox, and very clever when taking on the opposition. That comparison may have been made before but Ashton and Haller? 100% yes. Their major strength is their hold up play when giving support, lookout.
Saturday’s match wasn’t the first time the Seb Haller played up top with someone but in truth, it was the first time that it actually worked well. The pair each scored a goal and linked up extremely well all match, making their duo the only one that David Moyes should start-up top.
Michail Antonio and Bowen as well were able to bring the best out of Seb Haller and really push him to the next level. Sound familiar? Ashton told the West Ham media yesterday:
"“Antonio is an absolute handful and would be an absolute nightmare to play against for any defender. As soon as you put players around Haller with a bit of pace, like Antonio and Jarrod Bowen, that’s when you see the best of him.”"
This comparison is not only huge due to the level of respect it brings coming from Deano but if it works just as it did for them back in the late 1990s, the rest of the season could be a huge turning point for the club. It’s only been one match but with confidence rising, the end result could be massive.
There are a lot of injured players returning soon that make the Gaffer want to mix and match the formation and style of play up but after that impressive win on Saturday, why should he? If Michail and Haller can emulate anything close to what Ashton and Marlon did then relegation may soon be a thing of the past.
