David Moyes has usually opted for a back five during his time back at West Ham, although this has shown very negative results. Moyes returned to a traditional back four formed of Aaron Cresswell, Angelo Ogbonna, Issa Diop and Jeremy Ngakia.
Despite conceding one more goal then they did against Manchester City. The players seemed far more comfortable being back in the regular positions and defended valiantly against one of the best attacks in the league, only beaten through poor goalkeeping and a lucky deflection.
One of the biggest benefits of this formation change is the added attacker that the formation allows. Against Liverpool this was Felipe Anderson, having the extra man further forward gives the defenders more options to clear the ball too. Therefore, the ball is less likely to come right back towards the West Ham goal, as it did against the Citizens.
