Traditionally West Ham United fans love a player that will bleed for the club and never stop giving to the cause. Robert Snodgrass has optimized this attitude whenever he has played, however, there are always calls to drop the Flying Scotsman.

Robert Snodgrass was bought from Hull City in January 2017, signing for around £10.2 million, putting pen to paper on a three and a half year deal. The Scot initially struggled to fit into the side, saying former manager Slaven Bilic did not know where to play him. These issues saw the Hammers try to offload the winger only five months after he had signed for the club. This saw Snodgrass loaned away to Aston Villa for the 2017-18 season.

Snodgrass had a brilliant season in the championship, according to WhoScored the winger scored 7 goals and assisted 14 in 43 league appearances. The Scotsman played his way into former manager Manuel Pellegrini’s plans for the 2018-19 season. The 32-year-old had an okay season, scoring 2 goals, stunners against Fulham and Crystal Palace. Snodgrass also contributed 5 assists in the league, considering he was a rotational player and was adapting to a new central role, a fairly respectable contribution.

This season Snodgrass has been one of West Ham’s most consistent performers and has exceeded where others have failed. Snodgrass has scored 5 goals and assisted 4 more in only 20 league performances. The 32-year-old has averaged a goal contribution every 148 minutes he is on the pitch, better than any other West Ham player this season.

West Ham fans do have a point to suggest that Snodgrass should not be starting for the club. In a period where fans have been promised a “world-class stadium for a world-class team“. The success of Snodgrass is down to the failure of supposed high-profile players signed by the club. The failures of many wingers for whatever reason of Gokhan Tore, Sofiane Feghouli, Enner Valencia, Andriy Yarmolenko and Andre Ayew and injuries to Michail Antonio has carved an opening for Snodgrass, and he took his opportunity.

The former Hull City winger has developed his game to become a utility man for the Hammers. Snodgrass has played on both wings, attacking midfield or even as a defensive midfielder, and he always put one hundred percent effort in. At a perilous position in the league and season, the Hammers need as many players in the squad to take a leaf out of Snodgrass’ book and start putting in the graft and fight that ‘McMessi’ does to get the club out of the bottom three and away from the relegation zone.
