It’s not the first time West Ham has been in a relegation battle and in order to stay up, they must repeat history and look at the past for success.

If you want to get really particular, you don’t have to any further than The Great Escape Season when West Ham squeaked out relegation on the final day of football. Since then, only once have the Hammers went down and they will have to look back at history to be sure it is repeated.

Looking a step closer than that season, and you will find the Hammers in similar trouble as this one but with only 3 matches left in the 2017/18 campaign. West Ham might not have been already in the relegation zone but they were close and to boot, all eyes pointed on the insecurity of David Moyes at the club.

After losing back to back matches 4-1, the Hammers turned it on and long story short, avoided relegation and actually finished 13 in the EPL table to round out the season. The outcome? Amazing team wins against Leicester and Everton and an even tougher point against Manchester City to finish the final three matches on 7 points.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

If the Moyes and Company have any shot at turning this season around, they need to look to this past history lesson and grow from it. There are two things that put the Hammers in a deeper hole than that season, but with enough heart and team play… they could pull out the same results as then.

It’s not like there’s any surprise as to why the Hammers are failing, look no further than there lack of team play and horrific defending. What can fix either of those two things? Good attacking football that leads to points. Seems easy enough right? So why not… I mean honestly?

Optimistic? Definitely, but this season in the EPL is as screwy as we’ve seen in a while and with the potential that the squad has, why not? Now… I get it, I do. But all they need is a spark and against Man City, anything remains attainable. Learn from the past both good and bad and this season can light a spark that could see the Hammers survive once more.
