West Ham fans will be in shock to find out that today that SK Slavia Prague midfielder and Czech Player of the Year Tomáš Souček is having a medical in London.

David Moyes confirmed that Souček was half-way through his medical earlier today in his press conference as seen on the Official West Ham United site.

The Hammer’s have had an awful season so far, bad results on the pitch and fan unrest off it. This combination seems to have had an effect on the West Ham board. David Sullivan and David Gold have come under huge criticism from fans in the last couple of months, so this transfer could be a way of appeasing some of the fans.

The deal is understood to be around 20 million Euros (£16.8m), this would be the most West Ham have ever spent on a central midfielder. It is also the first time the club has bought a prominent central midfielder since Pedro Obiang, way back in 2015.

West Ham fans were alerted to the deal when official twitter account of Sk Slavia Prague tweeted that Tomáš Souček had been given permission to have a medical ahead of a move to the club. The deal will become the biggest in the Czech First League’s history.

David Moyes will be hoping Souček is the perfect man to sit next to Declan Rice, but also play a Box-to-Box role. Hammer’s will be very happy to know that Souček performs that role to a very good level at the moment. The 24-year-old plays as a defensive midfielder for SK Slavia Prague which has kept an impressive fourteen clean sheet when Souček has played.

Souček offers a lot more than just defensive solidity. The midfielder has contributed towards 24% of all Prague’s goals this season, scoring 12 goals and assisting 3 more in all competitions. For a defensive midfielder, those are very impressive stats. Especially when West Ham’s top contributor this season is striker Sebastian Haller, with 6 goals and 1 assist in the Premier League. So, if Souček continues his current form he could become a very important player at the London Stadium.

But will Souček be enough reinforcements to help keep West Ham in the Premier League? Unfortunately, it’s probably too difficult for a single man to do. The Stratford based club are still in desperate need of a new right-back, especially after injury to Ryan Fredericks and a failed move for Nottingham Forest full-back Matty Cash.

West Ham manager David Moyes also needs to move for a new attacker, injured to Andriy Yarmolenko, Felipe Anderson and Michail Antonio and the abysmal form of Manuel Lanzini is leaving West Ham with a blunt attack. Fans would love to see a reported move for Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen come to fruition. The Englishman would be available as he is in the last six months of his contract and could be a fantastic option for the club for years to come.

Next. West Ham must show some sense of life against Liverpool. dark

If the West Ham board can get Souček through the door and a couple of other big signings before the end of the Transfer Window, then they can indeed save their season and maybe their position at the club.
