The West Ham Academy of Football has a few names to boast as of late, and with David Moyes now in control, the emphasis on a strong English, Scottish, and Irish core is at the forefront with their first signing of the January window.

Arguably, no player is more important in the West Ham academy right now than Conor Coventry. The Irish youth international has inked a new deal, keeping him in East London until 2023. This is massive news for the Hammers as the midfield is their lightest section of the team and he is a clear strong prospect for the team.

West Ham ITK ExWHUemployee believes he will get loaned out to a League One side in January, which is a good move. Coventry has been the heartbeat to a West Ham U23 team that has dominated the PL2 this season and needs adult competition to continue to grow. Should he get regular game time, look for Coventry to push for a senior team spot next season or go out on loan to the Championship as Grady Diangana had.

Ex has also revealed that Coventry had declined more lucrative offers from both English and top Scottish teams in order to stay with West Ham. This attitude is becoming increasingly rare in modern football and Coventry is showing he loves the club by sticking with us.

Tensions were a little high with Coventry’s contract negotiation prior to him putting pen to paper. The defensive midfielder was asking for a new contract to put him in line with the more elite members of the prospect pool (by all accounts nothing exorbitant) but the board was reluctant due to memories of Reece Oxford not performing after getting his deal at a young age.

This was clearly resolved, and as mentioned previously, David Moyes is both an admirer of Coventry and also desires a strong core to the team of English, Irish, and Scottish players. Coventry factors into these plans beautifully for the future. There is no reason to believe he won’t be a success on loan and for this club in the future. Great start to January.
