Hop on the roller coaster ride of Arthur Masuaku at West Ham United
If you thought Arthur Masuaku was going to be a full-time starter at West Ham, you’d be wrong. If you thought he’d never play again, also wrong. The question remains though, where does he fit in?
West Ham is now moving on passed the midway point of the season but still have an insurmountable amount of question marks surrounding the club. One of those unanswered questions revolves around the use and play of Arthur Masuaku down the left side.
At some point through the first month of football King Arthur turned it on but after a bad match seeing him leave on a red card, he was taken over by the Hammers other questionable left-back, Aaron Cresswell. Since that moment against Aston Villa, his match performances have washed-out.
Overall this season he has featured in 8 total EPL matches cashing in on one beautiful assist and earning Man of the Match once as well. A stat that stood out was that he has a passing percentage just above 80% which seems high do to his misfortunes of late but that might fall right in line with his up and down season.
When predicting how his season was going to go many had hoped to see much of the same from last year. The combination of he and Felipe Anderson was one that was bonded well as they worked off of each other with ease. Not so much as they continually look like they are running over each other.
The battle for the left-back position between Masuaku and Cresswell seems to have been decided that whoever plays the best last gets to start again next week. The smart decision for sure as they are seemingly the same player besides that Masuaku has more pace.
As the season moves on it seems that his playtime could hit another up or down with the Hammers reappointment of David Moyes. While under Moyes a few years back, Masuaku flourished and came into his own. Can it happen again?
That question will have to wait to be answered but in answering where he fits in, it’s right here at West Ham. He clearly needs time to get his confidence back again but moving him in a more attacking role seems to be the best bet for the struggling left-back and Moyes might do just that.
