A West Ham fans appreciation post for Robert Snodgrass
One of the surprise stories once again for West Ham has been Robert “McMessi” Snodgrass. The Scotsman has once again found himself high up on the team sheet and for good reason.
Robert Snodgrass has had an interesting time at West Ham since the moment he got off the bus back in 2017. From being slated and called Dimitri Payet’s replacement to being shipped out on loan and your owners saying that you aren’t good enough. Snoddy has fought back time in time again to earn his rightful place at West Ham.
If you just take the past season and some change, you will see him truly transform into the player and leader that he is today. Although he might not be on the scoresheet that often when he has scored or assisted, West Ham is 4-2-1 with him being an integral part of each one of those matchups.
In his 40 career EPL appearances for West Ham, he has averaged a WhoScored.com score of 6.68 putting him towards the top of all Hammers players over these 3 years. Stats aside, he has become a solid voice and engine for the club. Everything he does is for the club, its fans, and his teammates.
After West Ham’s most recent loss to Wolves, he took the credit for the bad performance and took ownership of missing a sitter on net. Fellow GSH site expert wrote a piece speaking on Snoddy’s resiliency and will to get back up and go again.
Getting back up and going again has been the headline for his time in East London and yet he keeps going and yearning for more. Whether it’s barking out orders to the club, getting in the ear of opponents and referees alike, or pushing hard on every play, pass, or shot, he never backs down and that has to be something to give the fans and players hope.

Mark Noble might be the team leader and Declan Rice and Aaron Cresswell might have a solid role in team leadership but Bob is the unsung leader that you can’t help to look to. His drive pushes the players, his diehard attitude excites the fans, and his never back down attitude gets in the heads of the opposition. In a word, he is the Hammers Swiss Army Knife.
The story for Robert Snodgrass didn’t start good in East London but it is currently one of the only good ones. His story isn’t over either because if he keeps playing like this he can’t be benched. His contract runs out in the summer of 2021 when he will be pushing towards 34 years old but don’t let that fool you, he will play into his late 30’s if his body lets him.
With players like Snodgrass on the team, one can only hope that it’ll drive the other Hammer’s to do more of the same and gain some more ilk like him and over time that can be the part that brings back the West Ham way and the heart that this club so desperately needs.
