It’s one thing to lose and put in a good effort. Supporters aren’t stupid and can sense and appreciate a hard-fought battle. However, with Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham, his post-match comments show he’s out of ideas.

No ideas mean no results, and for West Ham, this is extremely important as they are mired in a wide-spanning relegation battle as it stands. The team Pellegrini constructed to play Wolves was strong and the players individually are solid, but there is no game plan on the pitch and its evident and concerning.

The growing belief that Pellegrini is past it and inept as a Premier League manager was only spurred on by his post-match comments. The comment drawing the most attention is as follows:

"I was happy with the attitude of the team, I think we dominated the most part of the game especially the second half, but Antonio couldn’t play so we needed to use the players we have.”"

Huh? The team didn’t run outside of a few players, we didn’t dominate ANY aspect of the game despite holding possession and not doing anything with it. This is not only an insult to supporters who traveled or watched their team, but it is also factually incorrect and worrying if our manager saw anything in this match as “dominant” from the hammers.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Statistically speaking, he’s wrong as well. West Ham shared possession as it was split 50/50, were outshot 7-4, had fewer corners, fewer crosses, fewer goals, and fewer assists. The only stats we topped Wolves in were fouls and cards!

West Ham haven’t been dominant in anything this season and any suggestion that the performance they put in at Wolverhampton. Confusingly so, Pellegrini had this to say about his team’s attacking performance today,

"I am not happy with the intensity that we had today, we need more quality to create more chances in the last third."

Okay, but why did you say that you were happy with the work rate of the team and the dominant effort you put forward just a few minutes prior? It’s clear that he is adlibbing his way through any media appearances he has and is completely lost when it comes to getting this team playing together.

It’s very apparent that the win at Chelsea was a result of players playing for the match and not for the manager. Michail Antonio was everywhere, Declan Rice looked like a midfield boss, Noble was terrific, both fullbacks were exceptional at both ends of the pitch. Why? Because it was a London Derby, not because of the manager.

He may have a great CV and all of the experience in the world, but Pellegrini can’t throw endless amounts of cash at his team and make a winner out of it at West Ham. He has tried with massive spending at the expense of squad depth this season and he’s failed. Time is up and he needs to move on.
