Last season the Hammers handled Newcastle fairly well on their way to winning both matches. For West Ham, they should be quick to remember last year’s matches while preparing for this weekend.
In a combined score from the previous two West Ham v Newcastle United matches, the Hammers won by a combined total of 5-0. In both matches, the Hammers never really looked down and kept pressing the entire game. This is something however, that isn’t the case right now for the Claret and Blue.
However, after all the woes, negativity, and an overwhelming sense of under performing, they don’t have to look very far to game plan how to take all three points this weekend against Newcastle United. Although the Magpies might be a must different side than last season, not much has changed.
Newcastle 0 – 3 West Ham, December 1st, 2018
As the Hammers jumped out to a quick lead after just 11 minutes when Snodgrass sent in a cross that former West Ham forward, Chicharito, put away. In the 63rd minute, the Mexican forward stuck again after finishing a flick-on from Arnautovic. The match was finished off by Anderson in stoppage time to finish the 3 to nil route.

That match could’ve shown a scoreline of 5 or 6 to nil but the Hammers failed to convert on a few chances. That same issue is a current one for the Hammers and has been all season. Besides passing the rest of that match was flawless. Their passing was top-notch and their ability to press often ended up being the difference.
West Ham 2 – 0 Newcastle, March 2nd, 2019
In the much-anticipated matchup between Declan Rice and Sean Longstaff, Rice came out on top. The Hammers English international CDM rocketed in a goal just 7 minutes into the match. Just before the end of the first half, Chicharito earned a penalty and Mr. West Ham, Mark Noble, sent it home to make it 2-0.
This match was a tale of two halves as Newcastle put on the pressure right from the start in the second half. The aggression that was there in the first half was gone in the second for the Hammers but they were able to prevail in the end and record a second clean sheet against the Magpies.
A big learning point from this match would be how to get from losing the momentum from half to half. From the first match to the second, there were clear learning points that the Hammers still struggling with today.
This upcoming match can easily be a turning point in the Hammer’s early season as they need to get back to their winning ways. With no disrespect to the Magpies, West Ham on paper and in person is much better and luckily for them, they can look back at previous mistakes to learn on their current mistakes to take down the same team. Until then, COME ON YOU IRONS!
