A poor overall showing from West Ham sees the team’s unbeaten run end as Crystal Palace win a boring war of attrition at the London Stadium. Here’s how the Iron’s were graded post-match.

Starting XI:

Roberto – 6: You’d be wrong to blame either goal on Roberto in this match. The first was a penalty, and the second was a broken play where the opposing team’s striker was left alone in front of goal. He needs to be more vocal and work on his distribution, though.

Ryan Fredericks – 7: Fredericks is quietly having a really strong season for the Hammers and is putting to bed the unrest over Pablo Zabaleta’s impending retirement. He assisted Haller’s goal in this one and was strong with overlapping play.

Issa Diop – 5: Diop was the worst of the two center-backs for West Ham in this match, and tends to get caught ball watching as was the case on the winning goal against. If he had netted his header that Guita caught, this score would be much higher.

Angelo Ogbonna – 7: The Italian stallion is surprising Hammers supporters more and more with each match played; without him in this one, Palace’s counter-attacking football would have taken over. He was a menace in the air and should have scored, but his rating is all about defensive headers.

Aaron Cresswell – 5: Cresswell has come back down to earth a little here after two stellar performances prior to this match. He looked fine in attack and fine in defense. It was a fine match for him. Hopefully, the injury he sustained isn’t serious.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Mark Noble – 6: It wasn’t his best day, that is for sure, but Noble was still the metronome to the West Ham team in this match. His long ball picked out Yarmolenko for what should have been a Haller goal early, showing off his great vision.

Declan Rice – 4: Is this too harsh? If you answered yes, would you still answer the same if it was Jack Wilshere who had committed a silly handball for no reason? Probably not, right? Rice had an off game, but it wasn’t all bad. Some time with England should set him straight.

Andriy Yarmolenko – 4: He just couldn’t get it going for this match, unfortunately, and thus his grade is abysmal. If the ball had bounced a little differently the could have been a much higher grade, but it didn’t so he needs to held to that standard. Yarmo was let down by his teammates a bit in this one.

Manuel Lanzini – 3: If you told me Lanzini didn’t play in this match, I’d probably believe you. He was completely invisible for the 68 minutes he was on the pitch, making no impact and stymying his own team’s offense.

Felipe Anderson – 5: No need to overexaggerate the loss by demanding Anderson be dropped. He didn’t play well in the final third but was a constant threat and helped bail out Cresswell and the defense on multiple occasions. Not good enough, but not his worst game by far.

Sebastien Haller – 7: Snake bitten in this match, Haller should have been the hattrick hero for West Ham, but leaves the pitch with one goal and zero points for his team. Bad footballing luck kept him quieter than he should have been.

Substitutes:

(68′) Pablo Fornals – 4: He didn’t get a good run out with the team in shambles from the weird rate of play. He’s better than he’s looked thus far, but just like in this match, we’ve yet to see the real Pablo Fornals.

(78′) Jack Wilshere – 4: His insertion into the match shoved Fornals out wide, and other than a solid run in Palace’s box, Wilshere didn’t impact the match. Maybe he needs more time or maybe he’s lost it. I haven’t a clue about this player.

(84′) Pablo Zabaleta – 5: The highest-ranked sub for good reason, Zabaleta actually did something when he came on, breaking up a few Palace attacks including one strong tackle at the edge of the box and a rare aerial duel won.
