Although it was shaky at times, West Ham got the job done on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup by defeating a stingy Newport County squad 2-0. This should be a massive confidence boost to both goal scorers, as they look to start making an impact in the Premier League.

It wasn’t always easy for the Hammers on Tuesday, but in the end, the Irons simply had too much quality in their side for Newport to handle. Jack Wilshere opened the scoring at the end of the first half, and Fornals added another with a tap-in to cap off a 2-0 victory for West Ham. Although the Hammers are onto the next round of the cup, these goals can hopefully kick-start Fornals and Wilshere in Premier League play.

Fornals hasn’t found much success in the Premier League this season. He started in the Brighton match, and came off of the bench for the City defeat and Watford victory, but has struggled to make an impact so far in Premier League play.

However, with Antonio’s most recent hamstring injury, Manuel Pellegrini will need Fornals to step up and potentially step into the starting XI. I think that the goal against Newport should help with Fornals confidence, and he should start to become a real contributor in the coming weeks in Premier League matches.

It is never easy for a player to come to the Premier League and get adapted to the style and pace of play that is so unique to English football. Fornals even admitted so in an interview, where he stated that it would take him some time to adapt to the speed and play-style of the English game. Hopefully, he is going to get adjusted sooner rather than later because Antonio’s hamstring problem means he might be the man that makes Pellegrini’s XI against Norwich City.

As for Jack Wilshere, he is in a bit of a different position. Wilshere had a fantastic preseason and really looked as if he was going to get back on form this season. However, that has not been the case so far in the Premier League. Wilshere made 2 starts, one against City and one against Brighton. Both times he was substituted off and failed to make a great impact on the game.

With West Ham’s lack of depth in the midfield, it would be great if Jack’s goal against Newport kick-started his Premier League performances. Noble and Rice are not going to be able to play every game this season, so Wilshere must pick up his performances and start proving to Manuel Pellegrini that he can trust him in the center of midfield.

Both Wilshere and Fornals have had slow starts to the Premier League season, however, the outlook for these 2 players looks bright. If Wilshere can start to pick up his game, along with Fornals becoming more adjusted, these are 2 great players that can make an immediate impact to Pellegrini’s first-team XI in the Premier League.
