At times this season, West Ham have looked very shaky and have been outplayed in various moments in their 3 matches. However, the Hammers are doing something they haven’t been able to do the past couple of seasons, picking up points even when they don’t play great.

If you would have told Hammers fans before this season started that West Ham would finish with 4 points after three games against Man City, Brighton, and Watford, with 2 of the 3 matches on the road, most fans would have taken the points.

That has been the difference so far in this year’s West Ham campaign. The Irons have not played great so far, and everyone involved with the team, including Manuel Pellegrini, would readily admit that to us. However, something about the performances at the start of this season feels different.

West Ham so far this season have been able to handle pressure from other sides, even without playing well, and are getting results that would have ended in defeats in previous seasons. Think about the Brighton match. for example. Did the Hammers play well in the match? Well, no. However, they were able to see the match out and get a tough point on the road. A point that I personally could not see West Ham teams from the past 2 or 3 years getting.

Even in the Watford match this past Saturday, you could see a different West Ham side than in previous years. The Hammers looked stretched at times and very vulnerable to Watford’s attack, especially after the Mark Noble penalty. Once again, however, the Irons were able to see out the pressure and let their quality show in the second half, securing a 3-1 victory at Vicarage Road.

You can see a certain confidence in this West Ham team, especially in attack. The front players in this year’s squad can cause tremendous problems for opposing back-lines. Although the defense has not been great by any standard, they are doing just enough for West Ham to pick up points. If they can keep up consistent defensive displays, Pellegrini’s men will only grow in confidence as the season progresses.

West Ham have not played great to start this season, but have managed to pick up some very decent results. Sometimes in the Premier League, you see teams who simply have an ability to get points out of a match even when the squad is not at its best. If West Ham is going to be a team with that quality, we could be in store for a very special season from the Hammers.
